A quick recommendation today.
Maddy Prior is a legendary English folk singer, founding member of Steeleye Span, and is here joined by the Carnival Band for a set of 18th and 19th century hymns. The Carnival Band are an English folk group that specialize in early and traditional music, and their ongoing collaboration with Maddy is perfect. The record was released in 1990, but it's still a breath of fresh air.
Listening Notes:
Because (1) this is a collection of hymns, and (2) because of Maddy’s vocal strength, this may be a “little bit here, little bit there” record for some of us, and not an entire listen-through. That said, I do recommend listening through the record at least once (if not, many times!). There just isn’t a perpetual need to listen to the project start-to-finish every time. You’ll find your favorites. Throw it on in the car or while cleaning the house.
One positive consequence of this record is that you and your family will be hearing someone sing and deliver on the promise of the title: lustily and with good courage. It’s a great example.
